Chapter 70

During the ride home, Alexa thinks of everything that has happened today. She couldn’t call the kids, but it’s still early, and then she remembers, she doesn’t know where her purse is either. She’ll ask Raphael about it tomorrow. Alexa wonders how David is doing and if they notified his son. She wants to go see him, but she doesn’t know what hospital he’s in. Alexa sighs, realizing there are so many questions but no answers.

When she gets home, Alexa decides to tell the kids that she had a problem with her car and while trying to fix a flat tire, she accidentally got her clothes dirty. She hates lying to them, but it would only traumatize them if they knew the truth.

The kids are glad to see her and ask where her car is. She tells them the story about the flat tire and borrows Andrew’s phone. Alexa calls Joan; she’s decided not to go to work tomorrow and leaves a message on Joan’s phone when she doesn’t answer.

“Hey, you guys, have you eaten?”

Andrew and Aimee come into the family room and sit with her. “Yeah, we made sandwiches from the leftover roast we had yesterday,” Aimee says.

“Okay. What were you guys up to today, anything special?” she asks.

“No, just arranging our rooms and unpacking the last of the boxes. We finished everything on the list you gave us,” Andrew says. “We’re pretty much done.”

“You and Aimee have really been a big help. I really appreciate it. You’ve worked hard,” she tells them.

“Mom, is Raphael a client, or is he a friend?” Andrew asks.

Alexa wonders why he is asking and says, “He is a client and a friend. Why do you ask?”

“No reason. I just think he seems like an okay guy. Are you going to… date him?”

Now Alexa’s eyebrows are raised. She’s not sure how to answer. “I like him. What would you think if I did decide to date him? How would you guys feel about that?”

Aimee smiles. “I don’t care. I think he likes you. Would you marry him?”

Alexa laughs. “Now I think that’s rushing things.”

Andrew has a smile on his face as he walks out of the family room. He stops, turns, and says, “You should date him, Mom.”

Amazingly, her son has just given her permission to date.

Aimee turns to her and asks, “Mom, now that we have a yard, can we get a dog? Remember, you said you’d think about it. So, what do you think?”

“I haven’t had a chance to think about it. We’ve been so busy these last few days that I’m not ready to make that decision right now.”

“Okay, but you’ll think about it?” Aimee asks, trying to pin her down.

“I promise to think about it, but, young lady, I’m not sure I want a dog.”

Aimee heads to her room, and Alexa walks into the kitchen and sits at the counter.

She starts making a list of things to do tomorrow. Number one on her list is “car” with a question mark, and number two is “phone,” so she can call Raphael regarding her car and purse.
